Performance Management

Performance management is process of evaluating of an individual in an organization with respect to his/her performance on the job and to see the potential for development. As Weiss and Hartle (1997) commented, performance management is: ‘A process for establishing a shared understanding about what is to be achieved and how it is to be achieved, and an approach to managing people that increases the probability of achieving success.’

The key concerns of the performance management are follows.

 · Aligning individual objectives to organizational objectives and encouraging individuals to uphold corporate core values.

· Enabling expectations to be defined and agreed in terms of role responsibilities and accountabilities (expected to do), skills (expected to have) and behaviours (expected to be)

· Providing opportunities for individuals to identify their own goals and develop their skills and competencies.

In simple terms Performance Management is aligning organizational goals with employee behavior.

Performance Appraisals

Performance Appraisal could be define as a systemic evaluation process of a particular job performed by an individual during a particular period and giving value to its effectiveness whilst providing feedback to the job incumbent.

Performance appraisal process consists of following steps.

  •        Performance Planning
  •        Performance Execution/Progress Review
  •        Performance Assessment
  •        Performance Review(Appraisal meeting)

Any organization in current context should focus on the below aspect when implementing the performance planning process.

  1. ·         It should cover a broad range of jobs in the organization
  2. ·         Align with the organization’s strategic direction and culture
  3. ·         Be practical and simple to understand
  4. ·         Provide an accurate picture of each employee’s performance
  5. ·         Include a collaborative process for setting goals and reviewing performance based on two-way communication between the employee and manager
  6. ·         Monitor and measure results
  7. ·         Provide training and development opportunities for improving performance

Why the performance appraisals important

·       Appraisal offers a valuable opportunity to focus on work activities and goals, to identify and correct existing problems, and to encourage better future performance.  Performance appraisal can have a profound effect on levels of employee motivation and satisfaction as it provides recognition for employees. It offers an excellent opportunity - perhaps the best that will ever occur - for a supervisor and subordinate to recognize and agree upon individual training and development needs.

Comments

  1. Every company needs to be full of enthusiastic, ambitious employees who do their job well and always exceed expectations. The reality, however, is that people are flawed. For this reason, performance management is important for an organization so that employees' services can be properly identified.
